What is PiYo?
  • PiYo is a low-impact, high-intensity body-transformation program that uses the most effective Pilates- and yoga-inspired moves to sculpt long, lean muscles and burn fat.

  • Trainer Chalene Johnson uses fluid movements, keeping you in constant motion to give you a dynamic cardio workout that typical Pilates or yoga workouts lack.

  • It’s low-impact so you won’t have to jump around or strain your joints.

  • It’s high-intensity so you get the fat-burning results of a more extreme program.

  • It’s designed to help you get an intensely defined, long and lean physique.

Benefits of Pilates, yoga, and cardio—all in one!
  • It’s an authentic, incredibly effective body-transformation program that combines Pilates- and yoga-inspired moves, all set to a faster pace, so you get your strength, flexibility, and cardio all in each workout. PiYo delivers the long, lean muscles and flat, toned abs of Pilates, a firm butt and strong arms like you’d get from yoga, and the weight-loss benefits of fat-burning cardio. The workouts take just 25–45 minutes each!

A little about PiYo and what it has done for me as an endurance athlete:

PiYo and Triathlon Training

I have been an athlete most of my adult life and prior to that was a distance runner in high school and in college. As I entered my early 40’s the impact of all that running started to take it’s toll on my hips, hamstrings, and feet. I had my first stress fracture in my left foot, then shortly thereafter, I began to have deep pain in my upper hamstring which took a significant amount of time to heal. I had to do something else to cross train so I purchased a road bike and began riding around the military base where we were living. I met a few riders along the way who talked me into doing a sprint triathlon that spring.  This was the BEST thing that could have happened to me because my body was begging me to cross train more!

So for the past 8 years I have raced many triathlons in South Carolina, Georgia, and Texas. I will admit, I am competitive so when I race, I give it everything I have. This takes a toll on your body of course. Those nagging injuries were always there- upper hamstring, hip flexor, and lower back pain. At one point I was seeing a pain management doctor who injected my Sacroilliac Joint in my lower back with a steroid to stop the pain. I also had 2 steroid shots in my hamstring that year. The pain management specialist recommended that I do some sort of stretching/yoga/flexibility training and I did not want to listen. (Most endurance athletes HATE stretching!) She even told me I would be seeing her LESS if I added flexibility training to my routine.

*****ENTER PIYO*****

When PiYo first came out I was excited to share the program with my followers because finally there was a way to get a GREAT workout without pounding on your joints. I tried it a few times at home on DVD and really loved it so I decided to get certified and teach it LIVE. I am so glad I did because it REALLY changed things for me as an endurance athlete.

Here is a summary of what PiYo has done for me:
  1. PiYo has been a solution to my tight hamstrings and lower back pain. Many of the moves open up the hips, stretch the hamstrings, glutes, and hip flexors. I really noticed a change in these areas after just a few short weeks. I no longer take 800mg motrin after a run or hard bike ride. My hamstring, hip flexor, and lower back pain is virtually gone and I attribute this to PiYo.

  2. I noticed an increase in flexibility and functional strength in all the right areas for an endurance athlete. The nice thing is that there is no additional time commitment- it’s like one stop shopping for strength and flexibility in one workout. You are actually gaining flexibility WHILE you strength train using your own body weight.

  3. PiYo is kind to your body. Don’t get me wrong- it’s not static stretching like a yoga class- it is CONSTANT fluid movement for one full hour. You are using your upper body (planks, pushups, tricep pushups, etc) and lower body (low lunges, single leg down dogs, squats, etc) for one GREAT total body workout with the addition of flexibility. I actually FEEL stronger and more flexible!I HIGHLY recommend PiYo to anyone who tells me they need a workout that will get them strong and flexible without strain on the body. PiYo has a nice way of packing in cardio, strength training, and flexibility into one workout. It will sculpt your muscles using your own body weight. It burns fat and builds lean musclemass. No heavy weights or jumping- just hardcore results.

Consult your physician, read the Fitness Guide, and follow all safety instructions before beginning any new exercise program.
